finding the wedding site
After only a few weeks of dating, we began planning our future wedding. First, in early January 2001,
we went diamond shopping at DePrisco's in Boston so Paul could
get some ideas for the engagement ring. (We thought we'd take our time on this step because we knew
people would think we were crazy if we got engaged having dated for only 8 weeks.) As the ring
shopping progressed, we began talking about where to get married. We knew it would be in the
Boston area, and we hoped it would be near the ocean.
On the President's Day holiday in February of 2001, we were eating breakfast and spontaneously decided
to take advantage of our shared day off and drive up to the Crane Estate in Ipswich, MA just to get some
ideas for reception sites. We got out of the car on that cold February day and stood at the top of
the bluff overlooking the ocean and, even with the snow on the ground and the cold wind blowing, we
knew that we'd found the perfect place to begin our life together.
Unfortunately, the office was closed that day so we couldn't speak to anyone about booking the site.
Not yet engaged, Paul called the Crane Estate the next day to inquire about availability for June of 2002.
June? You want a June wedding in 15 months? HA! The lovely people at the Crane Estate
gently explained that they're booked 2 years in advance for June weddings. However, there was
still one Saturday available for the 2002 season--August 24th. So, with checkbook in hand we booked
the Crane Estate. Now, there was just one small step that we still needed to take: getting engaged!
