the crane estate
The conserved landscapes of the 2,100-acre Crane Estate include rolling hills, quiet woods, open meadows, vibrant salt marshes, miles of sandy beaches, and spruce-clad estuary islands. The Inn at Castle Hill is immersed in this spectacular setting.
The centerpiece of the Crane Estate is Castle Hill with its imposing Great House. Completed in 1927, it presides over 165 acres of designed and natural landscapes and commanding panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean, Crane Beach, Cape Ann, and Plum Island. This 59-room Stuart-style mansion can be seen from far out at sea and miles around. Its famous, rolling lawn - the Grand Allee - stretches from the portico of the Great House to the precipitous bluffs which overlook Crane Beach.
Castle Hill is preserved as a National Historic Landmark offering tours and a popular schedule of public events, including picnic concerts, teas, theater, and holiday celebrations. A system of foot trails, winding drives, and woods roads helps visitors to explore the multitude of historic buildings, natural habitats, and unique landmarks that characterize this remarkable property.
